Chapter twenty-one

The sun’s rays beamed down hard as Lillian made her way through the dangerous Forest of Brittelia. But for the first time in this wretched place, she wasn’t alone.

She cast a glimpse to the man trotting beside her on her right; it still felt so strange to have someone alongside her. She had gotten so used to being alone, but it would have been mindless of her to decline his company. He could have killed her plenty of times and had chosen not to, and she also couldn’t ignore the small detail that he had risked his life to save her from that nasty beast.

Lillian still had no idea as to what his motives to help her were but that didn’t matter for the time being. She wasn’t trying to find someone who would be eternally loyal to her; she just needed a mercenary to act as an extra protection. She was only using him for his particular skillset in fighting off monsters and the nice plus that he had food and water. Lillian snuck another glance at the man walking next to her; she also didn’t mind that he was rather easy on the eyes.

But her quick glance turned into a glare of annoyance—he was however, an increasingly frustrating person to be around. She supposed it made sense that someone with so many positives had to have a negative somewhere and that just so happened to land on his obnoxious personality.

Her musings were stopped as she heard a faint sound of running water in the distance. She halted her steps and silenced her thoughts as she tried pinpointing where the noise originated from.

Nolan raised a brow, his eyes wandering around the forest before he opened his mouth. “So what—”

Lillian held up a finger, interrupting whatever useless thing he was going to utter. Nolan quickly got the message as he sealed his lips and nodded.

Closing her eyes, she concentrated on the sounds alone and could make out the flowings of a stream coming from the east. She then opened her eyes and pointed in the direction she had heard the noise. “This way.” Lillian didn’t give him a second to argue as she began to walk in the direction of the body of water.

He quickened his pace to catch up. “What’s this way?”

“A stream, a river, or some body of water I hope.”

“Oh. I hadn’t realized that’s what you were listening for. I could have told you it was this way.”

Lillian rolled her eyes. “Of course you could have.”

Nolan let out a low chuckle. “Are you always this snarky? Or is it only around me?”

She plastered on a smile and batted her eyelashes at him. “Just for you.”

A devilish grin formed on his face. “Just for me?” His blue eyes glistened with mischief. “I think I like the sound of that.”

Glaring at him in disgust, she stormed off, flashing him a vulgar gesture with her hand as she went.

Her obscene motion caused him to roar in laughter as he made his strides longer to keep up with her hurried pace.
